Primeval: New World

polarisprogramming:

Across the pond, Primeval is currently in limbo, but SPACE has a new spin-off that takes place in Vancouver, with an all-Canadian cast. What do you think of this idea? Can it be done? Is it still Primeval? What do the Canadian-specific aspects of the show do to help or hinder the concept?

Personally, I’m looking forward to it.

Canon through the tie-in novels already had anomalies happening outside the UK, so a North American team to manage them makes perfect sense. And given that Impossible is directly involved, as are a couple of the great minds behind Sanctuary (which is an awesome, similar show) I think it’ll be in good hands.

I also like the idea of them going a little darker and maybe sexier. I’ve always thought that the original was way too intense for the kiddie audience they seemed to want to aim for. It was at its best when it took things more seriously, and spent more time getting inside the characters’ heads, and raising the real-world stakes of what they were doing.

The one thing that bothers me, of course, is that this won’t be our original cast/characters, apart from potential cameos (since it takes place in the same universe.) I did fall in love with those folks, and Primeval without them will feel weird.

But! I also didn’t like Matt, Jess or Emily at first, and yet by the end of s5, I adored all three. So … I’m open-minded. Also hoping there might be some familiar faces in there, what with the cast of Eureka looking for jobs right now.

Lastly, I wouldn’t call the original in limbo. It’s basically dead. Circumstances being what they are, any continuation of the UK-based series would be an entirely different show from the one that just finished up. The show as we know it is, no pun intended, history. New World is our only chance to have any reasonable continuation of that universe at all. And given that? I’m choosing to embrace it, unless it turns out to be total crap.
