Unseen University: A Song of Bullshit and Facepalm

azorahai:

I just honestly think that everyone needs to take a deep breath and step back and realize several things.

  • It’s ok for people to get offended by other people’s opinions
  • It’s ok for people to call people out on gross opinions (i.e. misogynistic)
  • It’s ok for people to dislike certain characters…

Werd. All of this.

The thing that makes me avoid getting into this fandom proper is that some misguided folks think that disliking Sansa and/or Cersei, and calling them on their bad behavior is somehow inherently sexist. Which … no. Yes, it may be that some of their bad behavior is considered stereotypically feminine. But it’s not the feminine part that people dislike, it’s the bad behavior part.

If I hate a guy for being a self-centered dickweasel who would rather watch football than talk to his wife, I don’t hate men or masculinity. I hate shitty, selfish behavior.

There’s nothing wrong with disliking other girls or women, even if part of the reason you dislike them has to do with gender-coded behavior. The fact that our culture labels those behaviors with gender doesn’t have a damned thing to do with the inherent positive or negative aspects of the behavior itself.

For instance: I can’t stand mindless vanity. I can’t stand people who spend absolute fortunes on fashion and cosmetics for anything other than purely artistic/theatrical reasons.

But, since my culture codes mindless vanity as a feminine trait, people assume that my hating mindless vanity = hating women. Or femininity. Or something like that.

Ehm. No. There are plenty of feminine-coded traits I DO like: Physical affection, open emotion, negotiation to resolve conflict, etc. But I like those because they’re awesome traits for people to have, not because my culture thinks they belong exclusively or primarily to people with vaginas.

Essentialist “feminism” (look it up, kids) is a crock of absolute shit, and it actually sets us back. Women are not inherently inferior but nor are they somehow immune to criticism, even if that criticism is aimed at something horrid or stupid they’re doing that’s considered typical for women.
