Jay is a bird: ASOIAF and LADIES [spoiler warning for whole series]
BLANKET WARNING for spoilers over the whole series
(behind a cut b/c of that). Though I haven’t actually read ADWD so spoilers for that will be pretty nonspecific.I can’t seem to get the cut to work, sorry. :/ Will fiddle with it later.
So two of things that I am really frustrated about…
Just curious: Can you name five of his male characters who haven’t been beaten all to hell in some way or another? Hell, can you name one?
If this were a story in which the women were singled out for abuse while men remained unscathed, I’d agree with you. But they’re not getting it any worse (on balance) than the men are. Everyone, no matter what age, class, ability, whatever, gets tortured by this author. Everyone. He’s not brutalizing the women just to brutalize women. He’s an equal-opportunity sadist.
Also, I totally, completely do not get Cersei love. I really don’t. She’s a fascinating character, absolutely, but that doesn’t make her a good person, and certainly not a sympathetic one. The woman had children (Robert’s bastards) murdered, FFS. Yes, she’s suffering in a sexist culture, but that’s not an excuse. Every OTHER woman in this story is suffering, too, many in far worse ways than she does, and yet they somehow manage to not kill innocent children.
Cersei’s backstory may explain her actions, but it does not excuse them. She’s a reprehensible human being, full stop.
